Cychlorphine is a synthetic opioid more potent than fentanyl. Fentanyl test strips can’t detect it, and it’s being mixed into the illicit drug supply without people knowing. It has appeared in 19 states since 2024, and the DEA classified it as a Schedule I controlled substance in August 2026.
The good news is that naloxone can still reverse a cychlorphine overdose and restore breathing, according to public health officials. However, more than one dose may be needed. That’s why it’s critical to keep naloxone visible, accessible, and stocked with more than a single dose when seconds count.
